In colonial society it wasn't “who you are”, but “what is it that you have to offer.” So if Americans talk like sales men, even though they are not selling anything directly, they are surfing the paradigm of presenting themselves in the most positive way possible, which is exactly what they have been taught to do. Americans understand this kind of game, but in contrast to European standards this advertisement of one's qualities seems boorish. In American society the advertisement is thus a way of life. These values however do get exported along with the American culture and do as a result transplant into European consciousness and in a way colonise the European cultural space.
